Section 29 of 52 in Idra Rabba — 18 segments
Segment 1
The eyes of the head differ from other eyes. The combing of the brow that is over the lashes of the eyes is painted (a variant adds: as all eyes are painted) with blackness; heaps upon heaps of hair hang, and they are the adornment that is over the eyes, at the top of the forehead. And from the two of them are joined seven hundred thousand lords of providence. (a variant adds: which are over the shields of the eyes)
Segment 2
In the covering of the eyes flame a thousand and four hundred myriads, which are joined in the eyebrows, which are the covering; and the providence of the eye of the Ancient of Days is upon them. And at the hour when that covering is lifted, it appears like one who wakes from his sleep: his eyes are opened, and they see the open eye, and they are bathed in one whiteness of the good eye. This is what is written, “washed with milk” (S. S. 5, 12). What is “with milk”? With the first supernal whiteness (a variant reads: with the first whiteness of the good eye). And at that hour the providence of mercy is found. (a variant adds: And therefore the prayer of Israel ascends, so that He may open His eyes, and they may be bathed in that whiteness.)
Segment 3
And for this David prayed: “Awake, why do You sleep, O Lord? Arouse Yourself” (Ps. 44, 24) — that He may open His eyes, and they may be bathed in that whiteness. And all the while His eyes are not opened, all the lords of judgements subdue Israel, and the other nations rule over them. And at the time when He opens His eyes, they are bathed in the good eye, and there is mercy upon Israel. And the eye turns (a variant reads: shines), and works vengeance upon the other nations. This is what is written: “Rouse Yourself, and awake” (Ps. 35, 23). “Rouse Yourself”: to be bathed in that whiteness. “Awake”: to work vengeance upon those who subdue them.
