Segment 1
The nose. It has been taught in the Book of the Hidden Mystery: the nose of the Small of Countenance. By the nose the countenance is recognised. By this nose the word is explained that is written, “Smoke went up in His nostrils,” etc. (II Sam. 22, 9). “Smoke went up in His nostrils”: in this smoke are included fire and coals of fire. For there is no (a variant reads: By the nose the countenance is recognised. Three flames burn in its nostrils. From this nose three colours spread out — smoke, and fire, and coals of fire — as it is written, “Smoke went up in His nostrils” (II Sam. 22, 9). And there is no) smoke without fire, and no fire without smoke. And all of them rise up (a variant reads: are kindled) and go forth from His nose.
Segment 2
And it has been taught: when these three are joined, which are included in this smoke that goes forth from the nose, the nose wrinkles, and blows, and there goes forth smoke black and red, and between the two (a variant reads: in two) colours. And we call it Anger, and Wrath, and Destroyer. And if you say: Anger and Wrath — it is written, “For I was in dread of the anger and the wrath” (Deut. 9, 19), which are the black and the red smoke — Destroyer, from where do we know it? For it is written: “before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah” (Gen. 13, 10). He destroyed: the Destroyer, with fire that kindles a blaze.
Segment 3
And it has been taught: there are five powers (gevurot) in this Small of Countenance, and they rise to a thousand and four hundred powers; and they spread out in His nose, in the mouth, in His arms, in the hands, in the fingers. And therefore it is written: “Who can express the mighty acts of the Lord” (Ps. 106, 2). “Mighty acts” is written defectively. Here it is written gevurot, and there it is written, “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power (gevurah)” (I Chron. 29, 11). But thus it has been taught: when all the powers are joined together as one, it is called one gevurah.
