Segment 1

It has been taught: on the skull of the head hang a thousand thousand myriads, and myriads of myriads, of locks of black hair, and they are tangled one with another and intermingled one with another. And there is no reckoning of the strands of each and every lock, in which clean and unclean are held fast. And from here the reasons of the Torah are joined, in the clean, in the unclean — in all those sides that are clean, in all those sides that are unclean.

Segment 2

The locks sit tangled and strong; some of them smooth, and some of them strong. And in each and every lock sit strands, heaps upon heaps, flaming and hanging like a mighty warrior, a master of victorious battles, in a fitting adornment, in a beautiful adornment, strong (a variant adds: excellent as the cedars), great and strong. This is what is written, “excellent as the cedars” (S. S. 5, 15).

Segment 3

The locks of hair are set in order, and they hang heaps upon heaps, from this side to that side, over the skull. This is what is written, “His locks are curled” (S. S. 5, 11). And it has been taught: they sit heaps upon heaps because they are drawn from many springs, of the three courses of the brain. From the spring of the one hollow of the skull the hairs are drawn in a drawing-forth, and they become heaps that hang from many springs which are drawn from this hollow. From the second hollow fifty springs go forth, and the hairs are drawn from those springs in a drawing-forth, and they become heaps that hang and are intermingled with other locks. From the third hollow there go forth a thousand thousands of chambers and halls, and the hairs are drawn in a drawing-forth from all of them (a variant adds: and they become heaps upon heaps and are intermingled with other locks). And therefore those locks are heaps upon heaps.
