Zohar, Idra Rabba 26

Section 26 of 52 in Idra Rabba — 4 segments

Segment 1

In the hollow of the skull (a variant reads: in this skull) three hollows are found, in which the brain dwells, and a thin membrane covers them — but not a hard, closed membrane, as in the Ancient of Days. And therefore this brain spreads out and shines (a variant reads: and goes forth) to thirty-two paths. This is what is written, “And a river went out of Eden” (Gen. 2, 10).

Segment 2

And it has been taught: in three hollows of the skull the brain dwells. From one hollow one spring bursts forth (a variant reads: and spreads out) to four sides, and there go forth from that brain which dwells in this hollow thirty-two paths, spirits of wisdom.

Segment 3

From the second hollow another spring bursts forth and spreads out, and fifty gates are opened. From these fifty gates are joined the fifty days of the Torah, the fifty years of the Jubilee, the fifty thousand generations in which the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to restore His spirit to him and to dwell in him.
