Segment 1א׳

אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵי, כַּמָה חֲבִיבִין יִשְׂרָאֵל קַמֵּי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, בְּקַדְמִיתָא קָרָא לוֹן גּוֹי קָדוֹשׁ, דִּכְתִּיב, (דברים י״ד:ב׳) כִּי עַם קָדוֹשׁ אַתָּה וְגוֹ'. לְבָתַר קָרָא לוֹן קֹדֶשׁ, דִּכְתִּיב, (ירמיהו ב׳:ג׳) קֹדֶשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל לַיְיָ' רֵאשִׁית תְּבוּאָתֹה. מַה בֵּין הַאי לְהַאי. אָמַר רִבִּי אַבָּא, קֹדֶשׁ עִלָּאָה מִכֹּלָּא, דְּהָכִי תָּנֵינָן, כַּד אִתְחַבְּרָן כֻּלְּהוּ קְדוֹשֵׁי כַּחֲדָא, אִקְרוּן קָדוֹשׁ. וְכֻלְּהוּ סַלְּקִין וּמִתְכַּנְּשִׁין לְהַהוּא אֲתָר עִלָּאָה, דְּאִקְרֵי קֹדֶשׁ.

R. Jose said: ‘God first called Israel “holy”, as it is written, “For thou art a holy people”, etc. (Deut. 14, 2). Then He called them “holiness”, as it is written, “Israel is holiness (kodesh) to the Lord, the firstfruits…

Segment 2ב׳

וּבְגִין כָּךְ ק' ק' ק' (קדוש קדוש קדוש), קֹדֶשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל אִתְעָבִיד מִנַּיְיהוּ. וּבְגִין דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל בִּתְלַת דַּרְגִּין מִתְעַטְּרִן, כַּד אִתְחַבְּרָן כַּחֲדָא, אִקְרוּן קֹדֶשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל לַיְיָ', דְּאִיהִי רֵאשִׁית. וְהָא אוֹקִימְנָא תְּבוּאָתֹה, בְּהֵ"א. כָּל אוֹכְלָיו יֶאְשָׁמוּ, מַאי כָּל אוֹכְלָיו יֶאְשָׁמוּ. אָמַר רִבִּי אַבָּא, הָא אִתְּמַר, דִּכְתִּיב, (ויקרא כ״ב:י״ד) וְאִישׁ כִּי יֹאכַל קֹדֶשׁ בִּשְׁגָגָה. וּכְתִיב (שם) וְכָל זָר לֹא יֹאכַל קֹדֶשׁ, וְיִשְׂרָאֵל אִקְרוּן קֹדֶשׁ, בְּגִין כָּךְ כָּל אוֹכְלָיו יֶאְשָׁמוּ.

And therefore “Holy, holy, holy”: the holiness of Israel is made from them. And because Israel are crowned with three grades, when they are joined as one they are called “Israel is holiness to the Lord”, which is the beginning. And we have explained “His increase”, written with a He. “All that devour him shall be held guilty” — what is meant by “all that devour him shall be held guilty”?’ R. Abba said: ‘It has been stated, for it is written, “And if a man eat of the holy thing in error” (Lev. 22, 14), and it is written, “and no stranger shall eat of the holy thing” (Ibid.). And Israel are called holiness; therefore “all that devour him shall be held guilty”.’

אָמַר רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, שֵׁירוּתָא וְסִיּוּמָא דְּכֹלָּא, אִתְכְּלִיל בַּקֹּדֶשׁ. (ס"א א') וְחָכְמָה עִלָּאָה קֹדֶשׁ אִקְרֵי, וְכַד נָהִיר דָּא חָכְמָה עִלָּאָה, חָכְמָה דִּשְׁלֹמֹה נָהִיר. כְּמָה דִּכְתִּיב, (מלכים א ה׳:י׳) וַתֵּרֶב חָכְמַת שְׁלֹמֹה, דְּקַיְּימָא סִיהֲרָא בְּאַשְׁלְמוּתָא. וְהָא אוֹקִימְנָא. וְכַד אִתְבָּרְכָא מִיסוֹד, הָכִי קָרֵינָן לָהּ קֹדֶשׁ, דְּאִיהוּ אַנְהִיר בִּשְׁלִימוּ. וְכַד לָא אִתְנַהֲרָא מִתְעַטְּרָא בְּאַשְׁלְמוּתָא, קָרֵינָן לָהּ רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ, וְלָא אִתְקְרֵי קֹדֶשׁ כְּהַהוּא דִּלְעֵילָּא.

R. Eleazar said: ‘The beginning and the end of all is comprised in holiness. And supernal chochmah (wisdom) is called holy; and when this supernal chochmah shines, the wisdom of Solomon shines, as it is written, “And Solomon’s wisdom excelled” (I Kings 5, 10), for the moon stood in her fullness. And we have explained this. And when she is blessed from yesod (foundation), so we call her “holy”, for he shines in fullness. And when she is not illumined and crowned in fullness, we call her “the holy spirit”, and she is not called “holy” like that which is above.
