The Zohar · Ha'Azinu
Zohar, Ha'Azinu 5
Section 5 of 17 in Ha'Azinu — 4 segments
Segment 1
Observe: the last generation, those who came out of Egypt, knew all, for Moses revealed to them all those forty years that they were in the wilderness, as I have said. It has been taught: R. Isaac said: ‘Even Moses did not reveal this except on that day when he was departing from the world, as it is written, “I am a hundred and twenty years old this day” (Deut. 31, 2) — on that very day. And even so he did not speak until permission was given to him, as it is written, “And now write for yourselves this song” (Ibid.). And when he revealed it, he did not say “Give ear, O Israel”, but “Give ear, O heavens”.’
Segment 2
R. Jose asked: ‘Why is this discourse called “song”?’ R. Isaac answered: ‘Just as a song is drawn from heaven to earth by the holy spirit, so these words were drawn from heaven to earth by the holy spirit.
Segment 3
Observe that Moses made a long exordium saying, “Give ear, ye heavens, and hear, O earth, let my discourse drop as the dew”, etc. Why all this? “Because I will call on the name of the Lord”.
