R. Simeon said: the mystery of those seven zayins that are inscribed in the tefillin, which are seven sevens (a variant reads: that are in the shins), which are alluded to in the seven lobes of the lung of a man, by which he draws in breath, and from it brings out a spark of fire that flames from his mouth. And further, they are an allusion to the seven days and weeks from Passover to Atzeret. And further, they are alluded to in the seven branches of the lampstand, upon which are seven holy lamps. And further, they are alluded to in the seven planets that give light in the firmament. And further, they are alluded to in the seven grades upon which the world stands. And they are the foundation and the root and the essence of all. And of them the Companions said: whoever wishes to lay the tefillin of the head must look at those two shins, which are alluded to in those seven zayins, in which there is an allusion to hidden mysteries, deep allusions. (Thus far.)
