Zohar, Eikev 4
Section 4 of 6 in Eikev — 34 segments
Segment 1
And ten things a man must do at the meal. One: the washing of the hands. Second: to prepare two loaves for the Sabbath. Third: to eat three meals, and to add from the profane to the holy. Fourth: to give light to the table with a lamp, as they have explained: the table in the north, and the lampstand in the south. And reclining is required, as they have explained: if they reclined, one blesses for them all.
Segment 2
And on the Sabbath, in all his affairs, a man must add from the profane to the holy — in his food and his drink, in his garments, in his reclining. For he must prepare for it a fair couch, with many embroidered cushions and coverings, from all that is in his house, like one who prepares a canopy for a bride. For the Sabbath is a queen, and she is a bride. And therefore the sages of the Mishnah used to go out on the eve of the Sabbath to greet her on the way, and they would say: Come, bride; come, bride. And they must rouse song and gladness for the table before her.
Segment 3
And not only that, but there is another mystery. Just as one must receive his Lady with many lights of lamps on the Sabbath, and with many delights, and fair garments, and a house set in order with many vessels of adornment, with a fair couch for each and every one — by this gladness and this ordering they bring it about that the evil handmaid is left in darkness, in hunger, in weeping, in lamentation, in black garments like a widow. For if this one is full, that one is laid waste.
