Segment 1
“And Aaron shall wave the Levites for a wave-offering before the Lord.” R. Judah asked R. Abba: Why did the priest wave the Levites? He said to him: A parable — to what may the matter be compared? To an infant. When he cries and is angry, what do they do to pacify him? R. Judah said to him: They wave him and rock him in order to quiet him. R. Abba said to him: Judah, Judah, this thing came into your hand and you did not search into it. Do your ears not hear what your mouth speaks?
Segment 2
So it is with the attribute of gevurah: it is angry and it rages. For it is written, “Simeon and Levi are brethren; weapons of violence are their kinship” (Gen. 49, 5), and it is written, “Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel” (Gen. 49, 7). Because they grow strong and grow hard in their anger and their wrath, going forth to execute judgement, to make an end of the people of the world and to cut them off — then the priest, who is the supernal chesed, waves that side of the Levites, which is the attribute of gevurah, in order to calm and quiet its rage and its anger, so that the hairs may be broken off from all their edges, and they may not grow strong and may not prevail. After the likeness of this, the priest waves the Levites for a wave-offering, so that their side of gevurah may be quieted, and so that judgement may not be roused in the world.
Segment 3
R. Judah came and kissed his hands. And when judgements are roused in the world, all the judgements that are found on every single day — our father Abraham, peace be upon him, thrusts them outside, and they do not stand before him. This is what is written, “and God has indignation every day” (Ps. 7).
