Segment 1
As it is written, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature” — that supernal living creature. And because this living creature is holy and supernal, when the Holy Land draws it within her and it is included in her, then we call it a soul. And observe: whenever a man walks in the way of truth, and his mouth and his tongue speak holy words in prayer and in the Torah, this soul cleaves to him; he is the beloved of his Master. How many guardians keep him on every side! He is marked for good above and below, and the holy Shekinah rests upon him. And it is she who ascends above and speaks before the Holy King, and enters through all the gates, and there is none who protests against her. And therefore she is called a speaking spirit; for all other souls have no permission to speak before the King but this one.
Segment 2
And when he turns his ways aside, and his lips and his tongue speak evil words, the Shekinah departs from him, and the holy soul passes away from him and does not cleave to him. And from the side of the mighty evil serpent a certain spirit is roused, which roams and devours in the world, and which rests nowhere but in a place from which supernal holiness has departed.
Segment 3
And those words ascend to the place of the evil serpent, for everything returns to its own place. And at the hour when they ascend, all proclaim and say: Depart from round about the evil word of such a one, and clear a place for the way of the mighty serpent. And that soul ascends in shame, in the distress of all, and they do not give her a place to speak as before. And then the serpent presents himself.
