Segment 1

The Book Bahir. What is the reason that we put blue in the fringes, and what is the reason for thirty-two? A parable: to what is the matter like? To a king who had a beautiful garden, and it had thirty-two paths, and he set a watchman over them, and he made those paths known to him alone. He said to him: Watch them, and walk in them every day; and as long as you tread them, peace be with you.

Segment 2

What did the watchman do? He said: If I am alone in these paths, one watchman cannot maintain these paths. And besides, the world will say: This king is miserly, and this watchman. Therefore this watchman set other watchmen over these paths, which are thirty-two paths.

Segment 3

And what is the reason for the blue? The watchman said: Perhaps the watchmen will say, The garden is mine. He gave them a sign: See the sign of the king, that it is his — that this garden and these paths, he it was who established them, and they are not mine; and here is his seal.
