R. Nehorai opened on the section of the fringes and expounded: “And they shall make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments throughout their generations” (Num. 15, 38). What is different here, while with the Sabbath “throughout their generations” is written defective, as it is written, “to make the sabbath throughout their generations” (Ex. 31, 16), defective? As we have learnt: they ordained the section of the fringes in the reading of the Shema. And in a man’s dwelling the sections of the reading of the Shema are found, except for the section of the fringes, which is missing from there. By what is it completed? Rather, when a man wraps himself in the fringes in his house and goes out with them to his door, it is completed. And the Holy One, blessed be He, rejoices in him, and the angel of death moves away from there; and this is “throughout their generations”, that he should be complete. And he goes out from the door of his house with this commandment, and the destroying angel moves away from there, and the man is saved from all harm. How do we know it? From what is written, mezuzot (doorposts): from its own letters it is implied, zaz mavet (death moves away) — that he was not given permission to destroy, and he moves away from his door.

Segment 2

With the Sabbath, where it is written “throughout their generations”, what is the reason? Because once the day has been sanctified, the dwelling of Israel must be with a lamp lit, and a table set, and a bed spread, and their dwelling made ready like the dwelling of a bridegroom, to receive the bride in it. And what is she? The Sabbath is a bride. And she is never brought in except into a dwelling made ready in her honour, as befits her. And therefore it is written, “to make the sabbath”, and it is written, “throughout their generations” — to bring into it a holy bride, to her dwelling, and to be within it. At the hour when the day has been sanctified, and this bride comes and does not find a dwelling made ready, and a table set, and a lamp lit, this bride says: This dwelling is not of Israel. “Between Me and the children of Israel” is written: this one is not of Israel, his dwelling is not for holiness. Therefore a mark of holiness is needed in the house. And therefore it is written “throughout their generations”, with the Sabbath and with the fringes.

Segment 3

R. Nehorai said: I testify concerning one who goes out from the gate of his house wrapped in a commandment, with phylacteries on his head: at the hour when he goes out between the two gates, the Shekinah is present over him, and two angels stand over him, one on the right and one on the left, and all of them escort him to the synagogue and bless him. And one accuser, who stands before the doors of a man, goes behind them, and against his will he answers and says, Amen.
