R. Rehumai said: What is the meaning of what is written, “And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them, and he came down”? But he had already come down! Rather, “and he came down from offering the sin-offering and the burnt-offering”, and afterwards, “And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people.” Why this lifting up? Because he had brought an offering near, and it was received with favour before their Father in heaven. As it has been said: he who brings them near to the supernal ones and unites them must unite these in their sum. And what is “toward the people”? For the sake of the people. And what is the reason for blessing them with a blessing by a lifting up? Because there are in a man ten fingers, a hint of the ten sefirot (emanations) with which heaven and earth were sealed.
