Section 15 of 18 in Addenda, Volume III — 6 segments

Segment 1

The image upon a man is a four-square throne with four living creatures, and a man to sit upon the throne. Each and every limb of this image is an angel who is appointed over each and every precept, as the Masters of the Mishnah have explained: he who performs one commandment acquires for himself one advocate.

Segment 2

The image in the wicked is idolatry. Its four living creatures are Iniquity, Destroyer, Anger and Wrath; the four faces of idolatry are the menstruant, the bondwoman, the gentile woman, the harlot. And therefore, (Gen. 1, 27) “And God created man in His own image” — this is Metatron. Who is the Elohim that created him? This is the living God and everlasting King. “In the image of God He created him” — this is Samael, from whom come other gods, of whom it is said, (Ex. 20, 3) “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Segment 3

If he merits [it], God creates him in the image of Metatron, a servant beneath his Master. And that is [the meaning of] that, God created man in His/his image (Genesis 1:27), in that mold. But if he does not merit [it], it is the image of Samael. We learned he is the angel of death under the authority of the Holy One, blessed be He, to judge people in Gehinnom through him unless one is righteous.
