Segment 1

“Saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt.” If you should say that he needed to take their registers and their genealogies — that was not needed, but only the general way, as it is written, “Behold, there is a people come out.” What is the reason? Because so their protector calls them many times. And therefore do not err, for it is written, “Let My people go” (Ex. 5, 1), at all times.

Segment 2

And further: when you took counsel against them with Pharaoh, in this same language you prevailed over them, as it is written, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are too many and too mighty for us” (Ex. 1, 9). So too now, as it is written, “Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt” — and no other brought them out; rather, they came out of themselves. And therefore you will be able to do them harm.

Segment 3

“behold, it has covered the eye of the earth.” There are those who say: Sihon and Og, whom Israel killed, who were the eye of the land. Rather, when the Holy One, blessed be He, brought the locust upon the land of Egypt, it is written, (Ex. 10, 15) “And it covered the eye of the whole earth, and the earth was darkened.” Why? Because all the sorceries and divinations of the world cannot work sorceries save upon one thing, in one grade, at one time; and this people brought out a mixed multitude, confounded, of many kinds mingled one with another, until all the sorceries and divinations could not stand. And this is “And it covered the eye of the whole earth.” And here it is written, “And it covered the eye of the earth” — and so it is assuredly.
