Segment 1

That Jew opened and said: (Gen. 1, 2) “And the earth was tohu (unformed) and bohu (void),” and so forth. Which is “the earth”? That which is known, supernal and lower. “Was tohu”: what is tohu? This is the line of green that encompasses the whole world, and it is called the line of tohu, as it is written, (Isa. 31) “And He shall stretch over it the line of tohu and the stones of bohu.” Bohu: as we have learnt, moist stones sunk within the deeps, and from them waters come forth.

Segment 2

Now there is to know. Tohu, which is the line of green — what was the line of green? Rather, we have found in the book of Kartana the physician — and Yodan of Caesarea was his name, and they called his name Kartana the physician because he was chief over all physicians and honoured in wisdom; and so they call an honoured man in the Persian tongue. And he said: “And the earth was tohu.” What is tohu? It is the line of green that goes round the world. And what is it? The shell of the nut; and this is the outer shell, which is green.

Segment 3

Within it, bohu, and these are the moist stones from which waters come forth. From tohu are drawn skin and flesh; from bohu are drawn the bones within it. “And darkness”: this is the drawing forth from which the people of Esau is drawn. And should you say, what of tohu? See, so it is assuredly, for darkness hangs from it. Rather, those moist stones entered into the midst, and from it are drawn the bones, as has been said; and darkness is a thin drawing forth, from which Esau is drawn.
