Section 9 of 10 in Addenda, Volume II — 28 segments
Segment 1
We have learnt in the Zohar: whoever holds fast to the Torah, it supports him and strengthens him upon his thighs, so that he does not turn aside to the right or to the left. Happy are Israel, for the Holy One, blessed be He, gave them the Torah, to reveal to them supernal mysteries. Of them it is written, “But you who cleave to the Lord your God” (Deut. 4, 4), and so on.
Segment 2
Observe: when the Holy One, blessed be He, gave the Torah to Israel, He inscribed it in the mystery of the Holy Name. He said, “I am the Lord your God” (Ex. 20, 2) — in the mystery of chesed (lovingkindness), in which Abraham holds fast; and corresponding to it are the positive commandments. And the mystery of this: the first charge that the Holy One, blessed be He, charged upon Abraham was a positive commandment, as it is written, “Get you out of your country” (Gen. 12). And therefore the number of the positive commandments is two hundred and forty-eight, like the number of Abraham.
Segment 3
“You shall have no other gods” (Ex. 20, 3), and so on — in the mystery of gevurah (might), in which Isaac holds fast; for all those other gods, and those chieftains appointed over them, suck from its side, and so Esau and all those appointed ones of his. For Isaac holds fast to the negative commandments; and his first charge was a negative commandment, as it is written, “Do not go down into Egypt” (Gen. 26, 2). And the negative commandment comes from the side of judgement, for a man is punished when he transgresses it.
