Segment 1
From the Book Bahir. R. Berechiah sat and expounded: What is it that is written, “And let them take for Me an offering” (Ex. 25, 2)? Thus said the Holy One, blessed be He: That offering — you shall lift it up in your prayers. And who is he whose heart has moved him to be drawn away from this world? Honour him, for in him I rejoice, because he makes My name known; and from him it is fitting to take My offering, as it is said, “Of every man whose heart makes him willing you shall take My offering” (Ex. 25, 2) — from that one who gives willingly.
Segment 2
For R. Rehumai said: The righteous and the pious of Israel are those who lift Me up (a variant reads: him) above all the world by their merits; and from them the Lev is sustained, and the heart sustains them, and all the holy forms that are appointed over the nations. And the holy ones of Israel took from the body of the tree and from its heart. As the heart is goodly, the fruit of the body, so too Israel took the goodly tree.
Segment 3
As with the palm tree: its branches are round about it and its lulav is in the middle. So too Israel took the body of this tree, which is its heart. And corresponding to the body is the spinal cord in a man, which is the mainstay of the body. Why (a variant reads: and what is) this lulav? It is written lo lev — to him, a heart; and the heart too is handed over to lo. And what is this Lev? Thirty-two paths of wisdom are in it, and in every one of those paths is a form that keeps watch, as it is said, “to keep the way of the tree of life” (Gen. 3, 24).
