Segment 1א׳

עַל יַמִּים יָסְדָה, אִלֵּין חַכִּימִין דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל רַבְרְבַיָּא דְּיָסְדָן אוֹרַיְיתָא וְחָכְמָתָא דְּאִתְקְרִיאַת הַיָּם הַגָּדוֹל וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר (קהלת א') וְעַל נְהַרוֹת אִלֵּין תַּלְמִידָיָּיא דְּאִינוּן רַבְרְבִין מִן נַהֲרָא. וְכֵן הַרָב גָּדוֹל מִן הַתָלְמִידִים. וְאִינוּן מְחַדְדִין אֶת הַרָב בְּקוּשִׁיוֹתֵיהֶן. וְהוּא מְתָרֵץ לוֹן כָּל הַקוּשִׁיוֹת וְאֵינוֹ מִתְרָשֵׁל. כְּמוֹ הַנְהַרוֹת שְׁנִמְשָׁכִין לַיָּם וְאֵינוֹ מָלֵא שְׁנֶּאֱמַר כָּל הַנְּחָלִים הוֹלְכִים אֶל הַיָּם. וְהַרְאָיָּה אֲמְרוּ אָחֲרֵי כֵן מִי יַעֲלֶה בְּהַר יְיָ. כִּי אֵין מַעֲשֶׂה בְּלָא חָכְמָה. כִּי הַתַלְמוּד מֵבִיא לִידֵי מַעֲשֶׂה:

“Upon the seas He founded it” — these are the great sages of Israel who founded the Torah and the wisdom that is called the Great Sea; and so it says (Eccl. 1). “And upon the rivers” — these are the disciples, who are greater than a river; and so too the master is greater than the disciples. And they sharpen the master with their difficulties, and he resolves all the difficulties for them and is not slack, like the rivers that are drawn to the sea and it is not full, as it is said, “All the rivers run into the sea.” And the proof is that they said afterwards, “Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord?” For there is no deed without wisdom, for study brings to deed.
