Ra’aya Meheimna (the Faithful Shepherd). The Holy Lamp said to him: after it says, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Gen. 1, 27), what is it that it says afterwards, “And God created man in His own image”? He said to him: what the Masters of the Mishnah have explained concerning this — that some of them said (he) was created, and some of them (said) he was not created, and the Holy One, blessed be He, created him; as it is written, “And God created man in His own image” (Gen. 1, 27). He said to him: if so, He gave no portion into the hand of one of them, and he was not made in their form, but in the likeness of the King, “in His own image, after His likeness” — for He is the image and the likeness of his form. He said: thus it is made known.
Segment 2
He said: God forbid. Rather, I say that he was created out of all, and He set him in rule over all; for if each one had given his portion, then at the time when His anger was upon him each one would have taken his portion from him — “for how little is he to be accounted!”
Segment 3
Rather, the Holy One, blessed be He, created him, each one in his own form. This is the holy malchut, which is the likeness of all, in which the Holy One, blessed be He, looked and created the world and all the creatures that He created in the world. And He comprised in her the higher and the lower without any separation at all, and He comprised in her the ten sefirot and all the names and appellations and modes of being; and the Cause of all, who is Lord over all, and there is no God beside Him, and none is found among all the higher and the lower less than He. For He is the knot of them all and the completeness of them all, that they may stand in Him, “and His kingdom rules over all.” And because no Cause above all is found among the higher and the lower less than He, even in one of them, she is drawn near (a variant reads: is called) the faith of Israel. And from the side of the Cause above all it is said of her, “for you saw no manner of form” (Deut. 4, 15); but from the side of the rest of the nations it is said of them (a variant reads: of her), “and the similitude of the Lord does he behold” (Num. 12, 8).
