Section 5 of 52 in Addenda, Volume I — 22 segments
Segment 1
The whiteness of the Torah. And when the light is clothed in darkness, it is said of the Torah, “I am black and comely” (Song 1, 5); and when the light, which is the whiteness, is taken up from there, she says, “Do not look upon me, that I am swarthy.” And the Torah is like the pupil of the eye, which is black, and beautiful by the light that shines in it.
Segment 2
And therefore of the pupil of the eye and the light that shines in it she said, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” (Ps. 27, 1). “My light” — the light of the Yod, which is the pupil of the eye; and it has two colours, light within and darkness without, so that she may have rule through them over all the praises (a variant reads: the shells). This is what is written, “and His kingdom rules over all” (Ps. 103, 19).
Segment 3
In the garment of light she rules over all those of whom it is said, “but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings” (Ex. 10, 23); and in the black garment she rules over the wicked, of whom it is said, “and the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness” (I Sam. 2, 9).
