Section 32 of 52 in Addenda, Volume I — 3 segments

Segment 1

The seventh is in the east of the world, and from there comes the seed of Israel; for the cord of the spine is drawn from the brain of a man and comes to the member, and from there is the seed. As it is written, (Isa. 43, 5) “I will bring your seed from the east”: when Israel are good, from this place “I will bring your seed” — a new seed shall be made new for you…

Segment 2

And when Israel are wicked, from the seed that has already come into the world; as it is written, (Eccl. 1, 4) “and another generation comes” — a generation that has already come. And what is “and from the west I will gather you”? From that measure which always inclines to the west. And why is it called ma’arav? Because there all the seed is mingled (mit’arev).

Segment 3

A parable: to what is the matter like? To a king’s son who had a fair and modest bride in his chamber; and he would take wealth from his father’s house and bring it to her continually, and she would take it all and always store it away and mingle it all. At the end of days he asked to see what she had gathered and what she had collected. This is what is written, “and from the west I will gather you.” And what is his father’s house? As it is written, “I will bring your seed from the east.” It teaches that from the east He brings and sows in the west, and afterwards He gathers what He has sown. (Thus far.)
