R. Bun sat and expounded: what is that which is written, (Isa. 45, 7) “I form the light, and create darkness”? Rather, of light, which has substance, forming is written; of darkness, which has no substance, creating is written, even as you say, (Amos 4, 13) “He that forms the mountains, and creates the wind.” If you wish, say: of light, which has substance, making is written, as it is written, “And God said: Let there be light. And there was light” — and being is nothing other than making; and read into it forming. Of darkness, in which there was no making but only division and separation, read into it creating, even as you say, “So-and-so grew well (hivri)”, and so forth. R. Berachiah said: what is that which is written, “And God said: Let there be light. And there was light”, and it does not say, “and it was”? A parable of a king who had a fair vessel and set it aside until he appointed a place for it and put it there. This is what is written, “Let there be light. And there was light” — for it already was.
