And from where do we learn that heaven is the Holy One, blessed be He? As it is written, (I Kings 8, 32) “And You shall hear the heaven.” Now, did Solomon pray to the heaven that they should hear his prayer? Rather, it is that their name is called by His name. And why is it called shamayim? Because it is round like a head; and it teaches that water is on its right and fire on its left, and it is in the middle: sa mayim, bear water — from fire and from water — and it brings peace between them. The fire came and found at its side the measure of fire; the water came and found at its side the measure of water. And this is (Job 25, 2) “He makes peace in His high places.” What is shamayim? It teaches that the Holy One, blessed be He, kneaded fire and water and beat them one against the other and made of them a head for His words, as it is said, (Ps. 119, 160) “the head of Your word is truth.” (Thus far.)
