Segment 1
“And the earth was tohu.” At the time when the Holy One, blessed be He, was within these shells, He was building worlds and destroying them; and this has been explained: that there is no flow of blessing in all the worlds, and the river which is the Righteous One is wasted and dried up in the two worlds, in this world and in the world to come.
Segment 2
And there are those who say that it arose in His thought to build worlds and to destroy them, and He said: these are pleasing to Me, and these are not pleasing to Me. Those of which it is said “the heaven and the earth” are pleasing to Me; and the others, of which it is said “and the earth was tohu and bohu”, which points to the worlds that it arose in His will to build and He did not make them — of them it is said tohu and bohu.
Segment 3
And at the time when the Holy One, blessed be He, was within these shells, it is said of Him, (Lam. 3, 44) “You have covered Yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.” Tohu and darkness — of them it is said, (Ex. 14, 20) “and there was the cloud and the darkness.” And these are the shells of the nut, the kernel within, which hangs (a variant reads: which is threefold) to the four sides. This is the Tetragrammaton, which receives no defilement, even as you say, (Jer. 23, 29) “Is not My word like fire? says the Lord.” As fire does not receive defilement, so His Name does not receive defilement.
