Segment 1א׳

כָּל אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁמַת רוּחַ חַיִּים בְּאַפָּיו מִכָּל אֲשֶׁר בְּחֲרַבָה מֵתוּ. שָׁאַל רַבִּי חִיָּיא לְר' אַבָּא אֲמַרְתּוּן דְנִשְׁמָתָא לָא עֲיְילָא בְּבַר נָשׁ עַד דְּאִסְתַכְּלָת בְּפוּלְחָנָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וּכְדֵין לֵיהֱוֵי לֵיהּ הַהִיא נִשְׁמָתָא. וְאַמְרִיתוּן דְנִשְׁמָתָא הִיא קַדִּישָׁא מַעַלְיָא עַל כֹּלָּא אִם כֵּן מַאי הוּא דְּאָמַר קְרָא כָּל אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁמַת רוּחַ חַיִּים וְגוֹ', הוֹאִיל וַהֲוָה לְהוּ נִשְׁמָתָא, הֲוָה לְהוּ לְאִשְׁתֵּזָבָא. לָא הֲוָה בִּידֵיהּ.

“All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, of all that was on the dry land, died.” R. Hiya asked R. Abba: You have said that the soul does not enter into a man until he has looked into the service of the Holy One, blessed be He, and then he has that soul; and you have said that the soul is holy, exalted above all. If so, what is it that Scripture says, “All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life,” and so forth? Since they had a soul, they should have been delivered. It was not in his hand.

Segment 2ב׳

אָתוּ שָׁיְילוּהָ לְר' אֶלְעָזָר בְּרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אָמַר לְהוּ כַּךְ הוּא, וְהָא קְרָא מְסַיֵּיעַ לֵיהּ דְהַכִי אָמַר אֲבוֹי (אבא), דְכִי אֲתָא טוֹפָנָא לָא חַזָא (הוה) בָּר נָשׁ דְּיַעֲבִיד קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בְּגִינֵיהּ, אֶלָּא נֹחַ. וּזְכוּתֶיהּ לָא הֲוָה אֶלָּא לְאַגָּנָא עֲלֵיהוֹן וְעַל בָּתֵיהוֹן דְלָא הֲוָה זְכוּתֵיהּ כָּל כַּךְ לְאַגָּנָא עַל כָּל דָרָא

They came and asked R. Eleazar the son of R. Simeon. He said to them: So it is, and Scripture supports it; for so said his father: when the flood came, he saw no man for whose sake the Holy One, blessed be He, would act, save Noah. And his merit was only to shield them and their houses, for his merit was not so great as to shield the whole generation.

Segment 3ג׳

וְאִינּוּן דַהֲווּ זַכָּאִין בְקַדְמִיתָא כְּגוֹן חֲנוֹךְ יֶרֶד דַהֲווּ לְהוּ נִשְׁמְתָא קַדִּישָׁא, וְחַזְיָּיאן לְמֶעְבָּד קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בְּגִינֵיהוֹן בְּחַרְבָּא מֵתוּ. וְהַיְינוּ דְּאָמַר כָּל אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁמַת רוּחַ חַיִּים בְּאַפָּיו אִינוּן דְנִשְׁמַתָא קַדִּישָׁא הֲוָה בְּהוֹן וְלָא תֵימָא דְעַל אִינוּן דַהֲווּ בְּטוֹפָנָא אָמַר, אֶלָּא אֲתָא קְרָא וְאָמַר מִכָּל אֲשֶׁר בְּחֲרַבָה מֵתוּ:

And those who had been righteous at the first, such as Enoch and Jared, who had a holy soul, and who were fit that the Holy One, blessed be He, should act for their sakes — they died by the sword. And this is what he said: “All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life” — those in whom was a holy soul. And do not say that he spoke of those who were in the flood; rather, Scripture came and said, “of all that was on the dry land, died.”
