AND ABRAHAM ROSE EARLY IN THE MORNING, and so forth. R. Beroka said: What is “put it on her shoulder”? Rather, that he charged her concerning the yoke of the faith, and that she should stand in what she had been at the first. It is written here, “put it on her shoulder,” and it is written there, (Ex. 15) “there He made for them a statute and an ordinance.” As there it is upon the Shekinah, so here too it is upon the Shekinah. What did she do? Once she saw herself going out from Abraham’s authority, she returned to her corruption, as it is written, “and she went, and strayed.” What is “and strayed”? That she went astray after idolatry and the idols of her father’s house. It is written here, “and strayed,” and it is written there, (Jer. 10, 15) “they are vanity, a work of delusion.”
