מֵחֲמִשִׁים עַד עֲשָׂרָה דְאִיהוּ שֵׁירוּתָא עַד עֲשָׂרָה דְאִיהוּ עֲשָׂרָה סוֹפָא דְּדַרְגִּין וְכֵיוָן דְּמָטָא עַד עֲשָׂרָה אָמַר, מִכָּאן וּלְתַתָּא לָאו אֲתַר לְקַיְימָא בִּתְשׁוּבָה וְתָב וְאָמַר אַרְבָּעִים בְּגִין דְיִשְׁתַזְבוּן ד' קִרְיָין, וְתַב וְאָמַר שְׁלֹשִׁים בְּגִין דְיִשְׁתַזְבוּן ג' קִרְיָין, וְתַב וְאָמַר עֶשְׂרִים בְּגִין דְיִשְׁתַזְבוּן תְרֵין קִרְיָין, וְתָב וְאָמַר עֲשָׂרָה בְּגִין דְיִשְׁתֵזִיב קַרְתָּא חֲדָא מֵאִינוּן חֲמִשָׁה בְּגִינֵי כָּךְ לָא נָחִית לְתַתָּא מִן עֲשָׂרָה:
From fifty, which is the beginning, down to ten — up to ten, for ten is the end of the grades. And once he reached ten he said: from here downward there is no place to stand in repentance. And he turned back and said forty, so that four cities might be delivered; and he turned back and said thirty, so that three cities might be delivered; and he turned back and said twenty, so that two cities might be delivered; and he turned back and said ten, so that one city out of those five might be delivered. For that reason he did not go down below ten.
