Segment 1א׳

לְאַבְרָהָם. זִמְנָא חֲדָא נָפַק רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן וְחָמָא (וחזא) עַלְמָא דְחַשִׁיךְ וְאַפִיל וְאִסְתַתָם נְהוֹרֵיהּ. אָמַר לֵיהּ לְרַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, תָּא וְנֶחֱזֵי מָה בָּעֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְמֶעְבָּד בְּעַלְמָא. אָזְלוּ וְאַשְׁכָּחוּ חַד מַלְאֲכָא דְּדָמֵי לְטוּרָא רַבְרְבָא וְאַפִּיק תְּלָתִין שַׁלְהוֹבִין דְּנוּרָא מִפּוּמֵיהּ.

To Abraham. Once R. Simeon went out and saw the world dark and gloomy, its light shut up. He said to R. Eleazar: Come and let us see what the Holy One, blessed be He, wants to do in the world. They went and found one angel who was like a great mountain, and he sent out thirty flames of fire from his mouth.

Segment 2ב׳

אָמַר לֵיהּ רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן מָה אַתְּ בָּעֵי לְמֵעְבָּד. אָמַר לֵיהּ בָּעֵינָא לְמֵחַרְבֵּיהּ לְעַלְמָא בְּגִין דְלָא שְׁכִיחֵי תְּלָתִין זַכָּאִין בְּדָרָא דְהַכִי גָּזָר קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא עַל אַבְרָהָם דִּכְתִיב (בראשית י"ח) הָיוֹ יִהְיֶה בְּגִימַטְרִיָּא תְּלָתִין. אָמַר לֵיהּ רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בְּמָטוּ מִינָךְ, זִיל קַמֵּיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וְאִימָא לֵיהּ, בָּר יוֹחָאי שָׁכִיחַ בְּאַרְעָא.

R. Simeon said to him: What do you want to do? He said to him: I want to destroy the world, because there are not thirty righteous men to be found in the generation; for so did the Holy One, blessed be He, decree concerning Abraham, as it is written, (Gen. 18) HAYO YIHYEH — in gematria, thirty. R. Simeon said to him: I beg of you, go before the Holy One, blessed be He, and say to Him: Bar Yohai is to be found in the earth.

Segment 3ג׳

אֲזַל הַהוּא מַלְאֲכָא קַמֵּיהּ דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וְאָמַר לֵיהּ, מָארֵיהּ דְעַלְמָא גָּלֵי קַמָּךְ מָה דְּאָמַר לִי בָּר יוֹחָאי. אָמַר לֵיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא זִיל אֲחַרְבֵיה לְעַלְמָא וְלָא תַשְׁגָּח בְּבַר יוֹחָאי.

That angel went before the Holy One, blessed be He, and said to Him: Master of the world, it is revealed before You what Bar Yohai said to me. The Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: Go, destroy the world, and pay no regard to Bar Yohai.

כַּד אֲתָא חַזְיֵיה ר' שִׁמְעוֹן לְמַלְאֲכָא אָמַר לֵיהּ אִי לָא תֵּיזִיל, גּוֹזַרְנָא עֲלָךְ דְלָא תֵּיעוּל לִשְׁמַיָּיא וְתֶּהֱוֵי בַאֲתַר עֲזָא וְעֲזָאֵל וְכַד תֵּיעוּל קַמֵּיהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, אִימָא לֵיהּ אִי לֵית תְּלָתִין זַכָּאִין בְּעַלְמָא לֶיהֱוָון עַשְׂרִין דְהַכִי כְּתִיב לא אֱעֶשֶׂה בַּעֲבוּר הַעֶשְׂרִים וְאִי לֵית עֶשְׂרִים לִיהווּ עֲשָׂרָה דְהַכִי כְּתִיב לא אַשְׁחִית בַּעֲבוּר הַעֲשָׂרָה וְאִי לֵית עֲשָׂרָה לֵיהווּ תְרִין דְּאִינּוּן אֲנָא וּבְרִי, דְהַכִי כְּתִיב (דברים י״ט:ט״ו) עַל פִּי שְׁנַיִם עֵדִים יָקוּם דָּבָר, וְאֵין דָּבָר אֶלָּא עוֹלָם דִּכְתִיב (תהילים ל״ג:ו׳) בִּדְבַר יְיָ שָׁמַיִם נַעֲשׁוֹּ. וְאִי לֵית תְרֵין, הַא אִית חַד וַאֲנָא הוּא דִּכְתִיב (משלי י׳:כ״ה) וְצַדִּיק יְסוֹד עוֹלָם. בָּהּ שַׁעְתָּא קָל מִן שְׁמַיָּיא נָפַק וְאָמַר, זַכָּאָה חוּלָקָךְ רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן. דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא גָּזָר לְעֵילָא וְאָתְּ מְבַטֵּל לְתַתָּא בְּוַדַאי עֲלָךְ אִתְמַר (תהילים קמ״ה:י״ט) רָצוֹן יְרֵאָיו יָעֲשֶׂה:

When he came, R. Simeon saw the angel. He said to him: If you do not go, I decree upon you that you shall not enter the heavens, and that you shall be in the place of Uzza and Azael. And when you come before the Holy One, blessed be He, say to Him: If there are not thirty righteous men in the world, let there be twenty, for so it is written, “I will not do it for the sake of the twenty”; and if there are not twenty, let there be ten, for so it is written, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten”; and if there are not ten, let there be two, who are I and my son, for so it is written, (Deut. 19, 15) “By the mouth of two witnesses shall a matter be established” — and a matter is nothing other than a world, as it is written, (Ps. 33, 6) “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made.” And if there are not two, here is one, and I am he, as it is written, (Prov. 10, 25) “and the righteous is the foundation of the world.” At that hour a voice went out from the heavens and said: Happy is your portion, R. Simeon, for the Holy One, blessed be He, decrees above and you annul below. Assuredly of you it is said, (Ps. 145, 19) “He fulfils the desire of those who fear Him.”
