Section 16 of 52 in Addenda, Volume I — 5 segments

Segment 1

Again she opens and says: Lord of the world, perhaps there shall be found there thirty — that is to say, perhaps there are among them righteous men who occupied themselves with, and attained, those thirty degrees that are hinted at in the prophecy of Ezekiel, in the verse, “And it came to pass in the thirtieth (year),” and so forth; and they are comprised in the thirty-two paths of wisdom, which are the twenty-two letters and the ten sefirot (emanations).

Segment 2

And so too: perhaps there are among them righteous men, singular and choice, who unify Your Name twice a day in the verse “Hear, O Israel,” in which are comprised the ten sefirot, in the word ECHAD: the Aleph with the Heth are nine, and the word itself is one, so there are ten. And of the Daleth, David the King, peace be upon him, said, (Ps. 118, 20) “This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter into it” — and DALETH is of the same language as “gate”. And twice a day makes twenty.

Segment 3

And when she does not find, she opens again and says: Lord of the world, perhaps there shall be found there ten — that is to say, perhaps there is found among them one who occupies himself with the ten sayings and with the Ten Commandments every day. And so too: perhaps there shall be found among them ten who come early to the synagogue; for we have learnt: whoever is counted among the first ten in the synagogue takes a reward equal to all of those who come after him. What is written? “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”
