Segment 1
R. Hizkiah said: Happy is the portion of Israel, that the Holy One, blessed be He, delighted in them and gave them the holy Torah, and warned them and gave them counsel to guard themselves above and below, so that none should rule over them but the Holy One, blessed be He. And they know how to thrust away from themselves all accusers and all denouncers, that they may be the portion of His lot and His inheritance, as it says, “For the portion of the Lord is His people, Jacob the lot of His inheritance” (Deut. 32, 9).
Segment 2
Observe: on New Year’s day the Holy One, blessed be He, sits in judgement over the world, and all the sons of the world sit in the reckoning; and there is none who does not enter into the reckoning. And the books of the living and of the dead are opened on that day. And the Holy One, blessed be He, because He delighted in them, gave them counsel for deliverance from all the accusations above, which are appointed; and so at every time that judgement rests upon the world.
Segment 3
On this day Israel make themselves ready to awaken mercy upon themselves. And with what? With the shofar. For the voice that goes forth ascends on high and awakens the shofar above; then (a variant reads: they awaken) mercies are awakened from their places, and the Holy One, blessed be He, rises from the throne of judgement and sits upon the throne of mercy, and has mercy upon Israel, and no permission is given to the accuser. And Israel sit before the Holy One, blessed be He, in repentance and sound the shofar (a variant reads: and they awaken), and mercies are awakened; for that voice which goes forth is an awakening of mercy. And then the Accuser cannot stand before the throne of mercy, for it does not come from that side, and no accusation is found.
