צִוָּה ה'. אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי זַכָּאִין אִינוּן יִשְׂרָאֵל דְאִתְיְיהִיב לְהוֹן אוֹרַיְתָא קַדִּישָׁא וְאִינּוּן מִשְׁתַּדְלֵי בָּהּ יְמָמָא וְלֵילֵי. תָּא חֲזֵי דְהָא מַשְׁמַע דְאִלוּלֵי דְאִשְׁתַּכַּח נֹחַ עִם תֵּיבוּתָא בְּאִתְחַבְּרוּתָא כַּחֲדָא לָא אִשְׁתֵּזִיב (ובגין כך) אַסְתִּים מִן עֵינָא בְּגוֹ תֵּיבוּתָא. קָמוּ וְאָזְלוּ. אָמַר הַהוּא יוּדָאי בְּוַדַּאי כְּתִיב עֲשֵׂה לְךָ תֵּיבַת עֲצֵי גוֹפֶר, לְךָ לְגַרְמָךְ בְּגִין לְאִתְחַבְּרָא בַּהֲדָהּ וּלְאִשְׁתֵּזָבָא בָּהּ מָה כְּתִיב וַיַּעֲשֹׁ נֹחַ כְּכָל אֲשֶׁר צִוָהוּ וְגוֹ'.

THE LORD COMMANDED. R. Jose said: Happy are Israel, to whom the holy Torah was given, and who labour in it by day and by night. Observe: from here it is implied that had Noah not been found together with the ark, joined as one, he would not have been delivered; (a variant reads: and therefore) he was hidden from the eye within the ark. They rose and went on. That Judean said: Assuredly it is written, “Make yourself an ark of gopher wood” — “yourself”, for your own sake, in order to be joined with it and to be delivered in it. What is written? “And Noah did according to all that He commanded him,” etc.
