An animal clawed by a beast of prey (that is, the clawing is a striking with which the wild animal or the bird struck with its claws) is a tereifah (an animal with a fatal defect). And not all wild animals and birds are equal in their clawing; rather, there are gradations upon gradations. How so? The lion has clawing even in a large ox and in the largest of the wild animals. The wolf has no clawing in a large animal, and not even in the smallest of them, such as calves; but it has clawing in a small animal, and even in the largest of the small animals, such as large sheep. The cat and the marten and the fox have no clawing in large sheep, but they have clawing in kids and lambs, and all the more so in all the birds. The weasel has no clawing in an animal at all, and not even in kids and lambs; but it has clawing in all the birds, even in the largest of them. The dog has no clawing at all, even in birds; and if it perforated as far as the body cavity, its law is like that of a thorn that perforated into the body cavity. The other unclean wild animals: any that is not larger than the wolf has no clawing in the largest of the small animals, in sheep and goats, even though it is as large as a wolf; but it has clawing in kids and lambs, and all the more so in birds. And if it was larger than the wolf, its law is like that of the wolf, and it has clawing in a small animal but not in a large one, even though it is as big as a lion. If it was larger than a lion, behold it is like a lion, and it has clawing in all. Hagah [Rema]: And there are those who are yet more stringent, that anything from the wolf upwards has clawing even in a large animal, and there is ground to be concerned for the stringency (Terumat haDeshen, siman 178, in the name of Or Zarua).
Se’if 2ב׳
All the birds have no clawing in an animal, even in kids and lambs, except for the hawk, which has clawing in kids and lambs; and that is where it perforates with its claw into the body cavity, for then it casts in venom.
Se’if 3ג׳
The hawk has clawing even in a bird larger than itself, provided that it is of the slender kind, such as turtledoves and young pigeons; but not in a hen and what is larger than it. And this is specifically in the large ones, but in the small ones they have clawing (Rashba and Tur). And the other birds of prey have clawing in a bird of their own kind, but not in a bird that is larger than they. Except for the large one that they call a falcon, which has clawing in all the birds (Tur and further poskim).
