Se’if 1א׳

If the kidneys were removed, it is fit. Therefore, if it was formed with one kidney or with three kidneys, it is fit. And likewise if the kidney was perforated, or was cut through — even as far as the place of the cleft — it is fit.

Se’if 2ב׳

If the kidney was diseased — and that is where its flesh becomes like the flesh of a corpse that has putrefied after some days, so that if one takes hold of part of it, it turns to mush and falls away — and this illness reached to the white that is within the kidney, this is a tereifah (an animal with a fatal defect). A sword-blow: its law is as one whose kidney was diseased (Hagahot Asheri and Mordechai, and see se'if katan 7). And likewise if fluid was found in the kidney, even though it is not putrid, or if turbid or putrid water was found in it, this is a tereifah — and that is where they reached to the white. But if clear water was found in it, it is fit, even if it reached to the white that is in it (and even if the clear water was found in a small blister in the kidney, it is fit) (Mordechai, chapter "These are the tereifot", and Hagahot Asheri). And if blood was found in it, its law is as water. (Kol Bo, and Issur v'Heter, klal 93.) And if it was found full of water whose appearance is bad, but it was not thick and turbid, but rather its appearance is saffron-like, like the appearance of honey, it is fit; and there is one who forbids, and so is the practice.

Se’if 3ג׳

If the disease was only in the white, then even though all the rest of the kidney is sound, it is a tereifah.
