Unslaughterable Animals· siman 42

Se’if 1א׳

A gall bladder that was perforated — it is a tereifah (an animal with a fatal defect); and if it was perforated over against the liver and the liver stops it up, it is fit. If the gall bladder adhered to another place, it is fit (Mordechai, chapter "These are the tereifot", and Issur v'Heter haAroch). And see below, siman 46.

Se’if 2ב׳

If the gall bladder was removed by hand, or is missing, it is a tereifah.

Se’if 3ג׳

If the gall bladder is missing, he tears the liver warp and woof and tastes it with his tongue: if he tastes a bitter taste, it is fit; and if he did not taste a bitter taste, he shall roast it on the coals and taste whether there is a bitter taste in it — if there is, it is fit, and if not, it is a tereifah. And even nowadays we may rely upon the tasting of the liver (Piskei Maharai, siman 30).
