לֶקֶט, שִׁכְחָה וּפֵאָה, אִם אֵין עֲנִיֵּי יִשְׂרָאֵל מְצוּיִים שָׁם לִטְּלָם, אֵין צָרִיךְ לְהַנִּיחָם. הַגָּה: וְהָאִדָּנָא אֵין נוֹהֲגִין בָּהֶם, לְפִי שֶׁהָרֹב עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים, וְאִם יַנִּיחוּם, יָבוֹאוּ עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים וְיִטְּלוּם (טוּר).
The gleanings, the forgotten sheaf and the corner of the field: if poor Israelites are not to be found there to take them, he need not leave them. Hagah [Rema]: And nowadays they do not practise them, because the majority are idolaters (oved kokhavim — the standing term for a gentile), and if they leave them, idolaters will come and take them (Tur).
