Once the wool has been joined with the linen by any manner of joining in the world, it is forbidden on account of kilayim (the forbidden mixture of wool and linen). How so? Wool and flax that he mixed together and combed and made felt of them; or that he mixed them and spun them together, and wove a garment from this yarn; or that he sewed a woollen garment to one of linen, even if he sewed them with threads of silk and hemp; or that he sewed a woollen garment with linen threads, or a linen garment with woollen threads; or tied woollen threads to linen threads, or braided them — this is kilayim.
Se’if 2ב׳
A woollen garment that he joined to a linen garment with a single stitch (that is, with a single thrust, where he thrust the needle into the garment) — it is not a joining, and this is not kilayim. If he gathered the two ends of the thread together, or stitched two stitches, this is kilayim. And there are those who say that it is kilayim only with two stitches and where he tied the two ends of the thread (Tur in the name of the Rosh).
Se’if 3ג׳
A woollen garment that came apart (that is, was torn) — it is permitted to fasten (that is, to join) it with linen threads, and he ties them; but he may not sew. Hagah [Rema]: And likewise it is permitted to put wool into a linen pillow or cushion, even though he sews all around it and cannot take out the wool; it is as a linen sack that he fills with wool and sews up its mouth, in which there is nothing of kilayim (so it is in the Tur). And even if (he thrust) the stitching into the wool itself, it is permitted, since he can take the wool from there without undoing the stitching. But with worn rags of woollen garments it is forbidden in such a case, since it is impossible to take the garments from there without undoing the stitching (his own opinion, and Mordechai, chapter "With what may a woman", and Tosafot, end of chapter 1 of Beitzah). And likewise it is permitted to attach woollen sleeves that have knots, or hooks, to a linen bodice that has holes, where they insert the knots or the hooks into the holes, since they are loose and he can take them out from there with his finger and need not tear the holes, even though he leaves them so always. But if they are so tight that it is impossible to take them out from there without tearing the holes, it is a joining, and forbidden (Terumat haDeshen, siman 256).
