By the law of the Torah it is permitted to sit on coverlets of kilayim (the forbidden mixture of wool and linen), as it is said: "it shall not come upon you" (Leviticus 19:19) — but you may spread it beneath you. Hagah [Rema]: And likewise it is permitted to bring them upon himself not by way of warming, such as to spread a tent of kilayim over himself (Tur). And likewise to spread a garment of kilayim over a tub in which he bathes, in order to keep in the heat (Mordechai, chapter 1 of Beitzah, and in Hagahot Asheri there), for it is forbidden only by way of wearing, or of bringing them upon himself by way of warming. And by the words of the Scribes, even ten coverlets one upon another with the bottom one of them kilayim — it is forbidden to sit on the uppermost, lest a strand wind itself about his flesh. When is this said? With soft ones, such as sheets and cloaks; but pillows and bolsters, which are hard, where there is no concern lest a strand wind itself about him, it is permitted to sleep on them, provided that his flesh does not touch them. When is this said? When they are empty and lie on a bench of wood or of stone; but if they are full, or even empty if they lie on a bed or on straw, it is forbidden, because it bends beneath him and winds about his flesh. Hagah [Rema]: And some say that all this speaks of kilayim by Torah law; but with kilayim by rabbinic law, where they are hard, it is permitted to sit on them in any circumstance, for since even when they are soft they are only rabbinic, with hard ones they did not decree (the Rashba, siman 762). And nevertheless, at the outset one should not make them of kilayim (Kol Bo).
Se’if 2ב׳
These kapanages of ours (a kind of felt covering) — if they are sewn with linen, one must take care not to bring them upon himself, and even not to spread them beneath him, until he sews them with silk or with hemp. Hagah [Rema]: All hard garments are permitted for spreading beneath him, and forbidden to wear. And hard felts are permitted even for wearing, since even soft ones are forbidden only by rabbinic law (Tur). And there are those who are stringent about wearing felts (Beit Yosef in the name of the Rambam).
Se’if 3ג׳
A large garment with kilayim at one end — it is forbidden to wear it even from its other end, even though the end that has the kilayim in it trails upon the ground.
