One who sows two kinds of grain or two kinds of vegetables together with a seed of the vineyard is flogged twice: one on account of "you shall not sow your field in mingled kinds" (Leviticus 19:19), and one on account of "you shall not sow your vineyard in mingled kinds" (Deuteronomy 22:9). And he is not flogged on account of "you shall not sow your vineyard in mingled kinds" (Deuteronomy 22:9) until he sows, in the Land of Israel, wheat and barley and a grape-pip in a single cast of the hand. And likewise if he covered them with earth, he is flogged. And likewise if he sowed two kinds of vegetable and a grape-pip, or one seed of a vegetable and one seed of a kind of grain and a grape-pip, in a single cast of the hand, he is flogged. And he is liable by Torah law only for hemp and luf (a bulbous plant of the arum kind) and the like — of the seeds that come to full growth together with the produce of the vineyard; but other seeds are forbidden by rabbinic law. And likewise it is forbidden by rabbinic law to sow the mingled seeds of a vineyard outside the Land. And one does not hoe together with an idolater (oved kokhavim — the standing term for a gentile) in kilayim (the forbidden mixed growths of a vineyard), but one may uproot together with him, so as to lessen the unseemliness.
Se’if 2ב׳
Nothing is forbidden on account of the mingled seeds of a vineyard except kinds of grain and kinds of vegetables alone. But other kinds of seeds it is permitted to sow in a vineyard; and there is no need to say other trees.
Se’if 3ג׳
It is forbidden to sow vegetables or grain beside the vines, or to plant a vine beside the vegetables or the grain. And if he did so, even though he is not flogged, he has rendered them forbidden, and both of them — the vegetables or the grain, and the vines — are forbidden in benefit, and they burn both of them, as it is said: "lest the fulness of the seed be forfeited" (Deuteronomy 22:9). And even the straw of the grain and the wood of these vines are forbidden in benefit, and they burn them; and he shall not heat an oven or a stove with them, nor cook with them in the fire of their burning.
