Se’if 1א׳

It is a mitzvah to keep away from the road of an idol by four cubits.

Se’if 2ב׳

If a thorn lodged in his foot before an idol, or his coins were scattered before it, he shall not stoop to remove the thorn and to take up the coins, because he appears as one who bows down to it; rather he shall sit down, or turn his back or his side toward the side of the idol, and afterwards take them up.

Se’if 3ג׳

Carved faces that pour out water before an idol — he shall not set his mouth upon their mouth and drink, because he appears as one who kisses the idol. Hagah [Rema]: There are those who say that anything that is forbidden only on account of the appearance to the eye, as in this law — if there is danger in the matter, such as if he will die if he does not drink, it is permitted to drink, and there is not in this the rule of "let him be killed and let him not transgress". (the Ran, chapter 1 of Avodah Zarah) Officers or priests who have a warp and woof upon their garments, or who carry an image before them in the manner of the hegemons — it is forbidden to bow down to them, or to remove the hat before them, save in a manner in which it does not so appear, as with one whose coins were scattered; or he shall rise before them before they come. And likewise he shall remove the hat and bow down before they come (Terumat haDeshen, siman 196). And there are those who are lenient in the matter, since it is known that the gentiles too do not remove the hat or bow down to the image, but to the officer (ibid., in the name of the Ri of Apnom and the Maharyu). And it is good to be stringent in accordance with the first reasoning.
