Se’if 1א׳

A knife of the appurtenances of an idol — the vessels used in its service — that is new, or an old one in which there is no question of gi'ulei ovdei kokhavim (the taste absorbed in an idolater's vessels, which the Torah requires to be purged out): it is permitted to slaughter a healthy animal with it, because he is one who spoils; and it is forbidden to slaughter an animal at the point of death (mesukenet) with it, because he is one who mends. A knife of an idolater (oved kokhavim — the standing term for a gentile) that he sharpened on his own millstone (see below, end of siman 121), or, if it was good, having no notches in it, and he thrust it into hard ground ten times and afterwards slaughtered with it — it is permitted. And if he slaughtered with it without any preparation of it, he rinses the place of slaughter; and if he peeled away, this is praiseworthy. And therefore one should peel it away. (Most of the poskim) Hagah [Rema]: And in a place of pressing need, where he has no other knife, it is permitted to slaughter with it in such a case at the outset; but he should not slaughter on condition that he will peel away afterwards. (Tur in the name of the Rosh and Rabbi Yerucham)

Se’if 2ב׳

A knife with which he slaughtered a valid animal — even though it is soiled with blood, it is permitted to slaughter with it another time; but it is forbidden to cut anything scalding hot with it, and it is permitted to cut anything cold with it by way of rinsing, that he rinse it first. Hagah [Rema]: And if he wishes to purge it in order to eat anything scalding hot with it, purging by way of pouring suffices for it, even though it is not like a first vessel. (Issur ve-Heter, kelal 58, in the name of the Maharam)

Se’if 3ג׳

A knife with which he slaughtered a tereifah (an animal with a fatal defect) — it is forbidden to slaughter with it until he rinses it in cold water or wipes it with something hard. And they are accustomed now to wipe it well with the animal's hair between each slaughter and the next, and that is quite proper. And if he slaughtered with it without rinsing, he should rinse the place of slaughter. And if he is accustomed to slaughter tereifot with it constantly, it requires a thrusting ten times into hard ground.
