Se’if 1א׳
About a courtyard with many houses that open up into it, the Rabbis prohibited carrying from house to house until they create an eruv in which they have collected bread from each household and place it in one of the houses in the courtyard. With this method, we see that it's as if all citizens [of the courtyard] are living in one house and the entire courtyard is designated to that one house.
Se’if 2ב׳
Those who dwell in tents or booths, or a camp that they surrounded with a partition, may not carry from tent to tent until they all make an eruv (the loaf set aside to join separate households into one for the Sabbath); but a caravan that they surrounded with a partition need not make an eruv, for they are all intermingled and those tents are not fixed for them. Hagah [Rema]: Houses that are on a ship require an eruv even though the ship has partitions; and if the ship has no partitions, it is forbidden to carry on the ship except within four cubits (Beit Yosef in the name of Shibbolei haLeket). And see below, the end of siman 382, and siman 405, se'if 7.
Se’if 3ג׳
The house in which the eruv is placed need not give bread. And the eruv need not be worth a perutah (the smallest copper coin). And it is not placed in the courtyard but in a house that is fit for dwelling — excluding a gatehouse, a portico and a gallery. And it must have in it four cubits by four cubits. And even if it belongs to a minor. And if they are accustomed always to put it in a particular house, they should not change it and put it in another house, on account of the ways of peace. And even a minor may collect the eruv and gather it. Hagah [Rema]: And the custom at this time is to place the eruv in the synagogue, and so the early authorities practised. And it seems to me that the reason is that our eruvin have the law of a partnership and need not be placed in a dwelling-house. And see below, simanim 386 and 387.
