One who wishes to pray both the greater afternoon prayer and the lesser afternoon prayer — it is not fitting for him to pray as voluntary other than the greater one; and if he prays the greater one as obligatory, he should pray the lesser one only as voluntary. But it is not fitting to pray a voluntary prayer unless he recognises in himself that he is careful and diligent, and confident in his mind that he can direct his heart in his prayer from beginning to end without a lapse of attention; but if he does not direct his heart in it properly, we apply to him: "To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?" (Isaiah 1:11). Hagah [Rema]: One does not say Ashrei (the psalm "Happy are they") before the afternoon prayer except when there is a minyan in the synagogue, so that they say over it the Kaddish that precedes the afternoon prayer (Hagahot Semak, and Kol Bo). Some have written that it is the custom to say the passage of the daily offering before the Ashrei of the afternoon prayer, corresponding to the daily offering of the afternoon, and it is a fine custom (Abudarham in the name of Rabbeinu Yonah, and Beit Yosef).
Se’if 2ב׳
If he forgot and did not pray the afternoon prayer, he prays the evening prayer twice; and he says Ashrei before the prayer that is the making up for the afternoon prayer. And see above, siman 108.
