The time of the Shema at night is from the hour of the emergence of three small stars; and if it is a cloudy day, he should wait until the doubt leaves his heart. And if he recited it before that, he recites it again without the blessings. And if the congregation are early to recite the Shema while it is still day, he recites the Shema and its blessings with them and prays with them, and when the time arrives he recites the Shema without the blessings. Hagah [Rema]: However, he should not pray again at night, even though the congregation are very early before nightfall, unless he is habitually given to other practices of abstinence and piety, for then it does not look like presumption that he prays again (Mordechai at the beginning of Berakhot, and Hagahot Maimoni, chapter 3 of the Laws of Prayer, and Terumat haDeshen, siman 1).
Se’if 2ב׳
It is forbidden to begin to eat within half an hour of the time of the evening Shema; and if he began to eat after its time had arrived, he stops and recites the Shema without its blessings, and finishes his meal, and afterwards recites it with its blessings and prays. Hagah [Rema]: But he need not stop for the prayer, since he has begun to eat; but if he has not begun to eat, even though he washes his hands, he must stop (the Ran, chapter 1 of Shabbat); and if there is not enough time to pray, he stops even for the prayer (the Raavad in his glosses, chapter 2 of the Laws of the Recitation of the Shema).
Se’if 3ג׳
From the outset one must recite the Shema immediately at the emergence of the stars, and its time is until midnight; and if he transgressed and delayed, and recited it before dawn broke, he has fulfilled his obligation.
