The law of a dog that took a cake, and ate the cake and set the stack on fire; it contains one se'if. A dog that took the cake and went to the stack (of the owner of the cake; Tur, se'if 1): if it put it down in the stack, and ate the cake and set the stack on fire, for the cake and for the place of the cake he pays full damage, and for the stack half damage. And if it was dragging the cake over the stack and going along and burning, he pays full damage for the cake and half damage for the place of the coal, and for the rest of the stack he is exempt (and some say that he pays half damage for the whole stack) (Tur there, and Beit Yosef in the name of the Rashba). In what case are these words said? When the owner of the coal guarded his fire and closed the door, and the dog came and dug through and took the cake from on the fire; but if he did not guard his fire, the owner of the fire is liable for the burning of the stack, and the owner of the dog is liable for the eating of the cake and for its place (and so wrote the Tur in the name of the Ramah). Hagah [Rema]: And some say that for the place of the cake each pays half, and for the rest of the stack the owner of the dog gives a quarter and the owner of the coal three parts; and if it threw it on the stack, then the owner of the dog pays a quarter even for the place of the cake, and the owner of the coal three parts (Tur there).
