Se’if 1א׳
How he announces, and how he tends it while it is still in his hand; it contains twenty-seven se'ifim. He is obliged to tend the lost object until he returns it to its owner's domain, to a guarded place. But if he returned it to a place that is not guarded, such as a garden or a ruin, and it was lost from there, he bears responsibility for it. If he returned the lost object in the morning to a place where the owner goes in and out in the morning, he is not obliged to tend it, for the owner sees it, even though it is not a guarded place. But with living creatures he is always obliged to tend it until he brings it into the owner's guarded domain; and he does not need the owner's knowledge. If he saw an animal that escaped from the fold and returned it to its place, he has fulfilled the mitzvah and does not need the owner's knowledge.
Se’if 2ב׳
If he returned it and it escaped, even a hundred times, he is obliged to return it, as it is said, "you shall surely return them" (Deuteronomy 22:1) — "surely return" implies even a hundred times.
Se’if 3ג׳
One who finds a lost object (and does not know its owner) (Tur) announces it in the synagogues and in the houses of study. And at a time when there are men who say, "A lost object that is found belongs to the king", he informs his neighbours and his acquaintances, and that is enough for him.
