רבי יוסי Rabbi Yose ben Chalafta
Tanna · 3rd generation (c. 110–135 CE) — named 1,673 times across 37 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabbi Yose ben Chalafta, of the third tannaitic generation at Tzippori, was a student of Rabbi Akiva and a tanner by trade. He is the sage of whom it is ruled that the halakha follows Rabbi Yose against a single colleague — the Talmud says his reasoning is a reasoning with a foundation to it — and that ruling makes him one of the most consequential voices in the Mishnah.
The chronology Seder Olam, which fixes the years from creation through the Second Temple, is ascribed to him, and the Talmud's dating discussions lean on it. His three sons — Rabbi Yishmael, Rabbi Elazar and Rabbi Menachem — are all named in the Mishnah. He is remembered for a modesty he described himself: that he never in his life called his wife his wife, but his home.
The halakha follows him against his colleagues; author of Seder Olam.
