Segment 1א׳

(ויקרא ה׳:ט״ו) נֶפֶשׁ כִּי תִמְעוֹל מַעַל וגוֹ', רִבִּי יִצְחָק אָמַר, הָא אוּקְמוּהָ נֶפֶשׁ ודַּאי. כְּתִיב (שמואל א כ״ה:כ״ט) והָיְתָה נֶפֶשׁ אֲדוֹנִי צְרוּרָה בִּצְרוֹר הַחַיִּים אֵת יְיָ' אֱלהֶיךָ, וּכְתִיב ואֵת נֶפֶשׁ אוֹיְבֶיךָ יְקַלְּעֶנָּה בְּתוֹךְ כַּף הַקָּלַע.

IF A SOUL (nefesh) COMMIT A TRESPASS. R. Isaac said: ‘It has been pointed out that the word nefesh (soul) is here used advisedly.

Segment 2ב׳

זַכָּאִין אִינּוּן צַדִיקַיָּיא דְּאִית לוֹן חוּלָקָא עִלָּאָה בְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, בְּחוּלָקָא קַדִישָׁא, בְּקִדּוּשֵׁי מַלְכָּא, בְּגִין דְּאִינּוּן מְקַדְּשֵׁי גַּרְמַיְיהוּ בְּקִדּוּשֵׁי דְּמָארֵיהוֹן. וְכָל מַאן דְּאִתְקַדָּשׁ, קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מְקַדֵּשׁ לֵיהּ, דִּכְתִיב (ויקרא כ׳:ז׳) וְהִתְקַדִּשְׁתֶּם וִהְיִיתֶם קְדוֹשִׁים. בַּר נָשׁ מְקַדֵּשׁ גַּרְמֵיהּ מִלְּרַע, מְקַדְּשִׁין לֵיהּ מִלְּעֵילָּא, וְכַד אִתְקַדָּשׁ בַּר נָשׁ בִּקְדוּשָׁה דְּמָארֵיהּ, מַלְבִּישִׁין (נ"א ירתין) לֵיהּ נִשְׁמְתָא קַדִישָׁא, אַחֲסָנָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וּכְנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל, וּכְדֵין יָרִית כֹּלָּא. וְאִלֵּין דְּאִקְרוּן בְּנִין לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, כְּמָה דִּכְתִּיב, (דברים י״ד:א׳) בָּנִים אַתֶּם לַיְיָ' אֱלֹהֵיכֶם, וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ.

Happy are the righteous who have a superior portion in the Holy One, blessed be He, the holy portion, in the sanctities of the King, because they sanctify themselves with the holiness of their Master. For whoever sanctifies himself, the Holy One, blessed be He, sanctifies him, as it is written, “And ye shall sanctify yourselves and ye shall be holy” (Lev. 11, 44). If a man sanctifies himself below, heaven sanctifies him from above, and clothes him with a holy super-soul (neshamah), the inheritance of the Holy One, blessed be He, and the Community of Israel. It is these who are called “sons of the Holy One”, as it is written, “sons are ye to the Lord your God” (Deut. 25, 1).

Segment 3ג׳

תָּא חֲזֵי כְּתִיב (בראשית א׳:כ״ד) תּוֹצֵא הָאָרֶץ נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה, וְאוֹקְמוּהָ (י"ט ע"א) נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה סְתָם. וּמֵהַהוּא חוּלָקָא יָרִית דָּוִד מַלְכָּא, וְאִתְקְשַׁר בְּקִשּׁוּרָא עִלָּאָה, וְאַחֲסִין מַלְכוּתָא, כְּמָה דְּאִתְּמַר. וּבְגִין כַּךְ וְהָיְתָה נֶפֶשׁ אֲדוֹנִי צְרוּרָה בִּצְרוֹר הַחַיִּים. וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ דְּנֶפֶשׁ אִתְקְשַׁר בְּרוּחַ, וְרוּחַ בִּנְּשָׁמָה, וּנְשָׁמָה בְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. זַכָּאָה חוּלָקֵיהּ מַאן דְּיָרִית יְרוּתָא דָּא עִלָּאָה.

It is written, “Let the earth bring forth a living soul” (Gen. 1, 24), this being the portion from which David inherited and became heir to the kingdom, as elsewhere explained. As has been stated, the soul is linked with the spirit, and the spirit with the super-soul. Happy those who obtain this noble heritage!

Segment 4ד׳

ווי לְאִינּוּן רַשִׁיעַיָּא דְּנַפְשָׁאן דִּלְהוֹן לָא זַכָּאן בְּעָלְמָא דֵּין, כָּל שֶׁכֵּן בְּעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי. עָלַיְיהוּ כְּתִיב (שמואל א כ״ה:כ״ט) וְאֵת נֶפֶשׁ אוֹיְבֶיךָ יְקַלְעֶנָּה בְּתוֹךְ כַּף הַקָּלַע. דְּאַזְלָן וְשָׁטָאן בְּעָלְמָא, וְלָא אַשְׁכְּחָן אֲתַר לְנַיְיחָא, לְאִתְקַשְּׁרָא בֵּיהּ, וְאִסְתַּאֲבָן (נ"א ואשתאבן) בְּגוֹ סִטְרָא דִּמְסָאֲבוּתָא, וְכָרוֹזָא קָארֵי וְאָמַר, נֶפֶשׁ כִּי תִמְעוֹל מַעַל בַּיְיָ' מִקְדַּשׁ יְיָ' טִמֵּא. דְּהָא בִּקְדוּשָּׁה לָא עָיֵיל, וְלָא אִתְכְּלִיל. וְאִינּוּן מַזִּיקֵי עָלְמָא, בְּגִין דְּמִתְדַּבְּקָן בְּהוּ, וּמִסְתַּאֲבָן.

Alas for the wicked whose souls do not even win them this world, much less the world to come I Of them it is written, “And the souls of thine enemies shall he sling out as from the hollow of a sling” (I Sam. 25, 29). For they wander about the world without finding a place to which to attach themselves, they are drawn into the side of impurity, and a herald proclaims of them: “then a soul commits a trespass, it defiles the sanctuary of the Lord, for it cannot enter into sanctity.”

Segment 5ה׳

רִבִּי יִצְחָק, אָמַר הָא אוּקְמוּהָ, נֶפֶשׁ, כַּד מִתְעַטְּרָא כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמַלְכָּא קַדִישָׁא, אִתְעֲטָּר, וְאִקְרֵי צְרוֹרָא דְּחַיֵּי, בְּגִין דְּבָהּ אִתְקְשַׁר כֹּלָּא. רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר אָמַר, שְׁכִינְתָּא כַּד נַטְלָא, בַּאֲבָהָתָא נַטְלָא, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (שמות י״ד:י״ט) ויִּסַּע מַלְאַךְ הָאֱלהִים הַהוֹלֵךְ וגוֹ'.

R. Isaac said: When the Community of Israel is crowned by the Holy King, it is crowned and called “the bundle of the living”, because in it all is bound together. R. Eleazar said: When the Shekinah journeys, she journeys with the Patriarchs, as it is written, “And the angel of God who went before… etc.”
