Section 63 of 67 in Vayikra — 10 segments
Segment 1
R. Judah opened and said: it is written, “the fruit of goodly trees, branches of palm trees” (Lev. 23). “The fruit of goodly trees”: which is it? This is the citron. And is the citron from a goodly tree? Are there not many thorns around it, on this side and on that? And you say, “the fruit of goodly trees”! But the mystery of the matter is as it is written, “And the Lord God built the rib which He had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man” (Gen. 2, 22). And it is written, “bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh” (Gen. 2, 23) — and this is “the fruit of goodly trees”. How do we know that man is called a tree? As it is written, “for man is the tree of the field” (Deut. 20, 19).
Segment 2
“Branches of palm trees”: which rises to seventy years, and in it the seventy supernal years are perfected. And this one binds and is knit above and below. And therefore it is called kappot, as you say kefitu, bound, for it rises to this side and to that. This is what is written, “for all that is in heaven and in earth” — precisely.
Segment 3
R. Jose said: “the fruit of goodly trees” — this is the altar, which makes fruits and brings up shoots to every side. What is the reason? Because all the seventy years give her a portion, and she is blessed from them all. What is it treating of? Because whoever sins toward the altar sins in all, for it is bound over against that which is bound above. And therefore this is knit to that: “the fruit of goodly trees, branches of palm trees”, and it is not written “and branches of palm trees”.
