Segment 1א׳
אָמְרוּ רִבִּי חִיָּיא וְרִבִּי יוֹסִי, וַדַּאי אוֹרְחָא תַּקִינָא קָמָן, עָאלוּ לִמְעַרְתָּא וְדַמְכוּ. בְּפַלְגּוּ לֵילְיָא, שַׁמְעוּ קָל חֵיוָתָא בְּמַדְבְּרָא דְּנַהֲמֵי. אַתְּעָרוּ. אָמַר רִבִּי חִיָּיא, הָא עִידָּן הוּא לְסַיְּיעָא לִכְנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל, דְּהִיא מְשָׁבַּחַת לְמַלְכָּא. אָמְרוּ, כָּל חַד וְחַד לֵימָא מִלָּה מִמַּה דְּשָׁמַע וְיָדַע בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, יָתְבוּ כֻּלְּהוּ.
Said R. Hiya and R. Jose: ‘Verily, our way is made straight before us.’ So they went into the cave and slept. At midnight they heard the cries of wild animals in the wilderness, so they got up. Said R. Hiya: ‘It is time to assist the Community of Israel in praising the King. Let each of us say something which he has learnt of the Torah. So they all sat down
Segment 2ב׳
פָּתַח רִבִּי חִיָּיא ואָמַר, (תהילים כ״ב:א׳) לַמְנַצֵּחַ עַל אַיֶּלֶת הַשַּׁחַר מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד. מַאן אַיֶּלֶת הַשַּׁחַר. דָּא כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל. דְּאִקְרֵי (משלי ה׳:י״ט) אַיֶּלֶת אֲהָבִים וְיַעֲלַת חֵן. וְכִי אַיֶּלֶת הַשַּׁחַר, וְלָא כָּל יוֹמָא. אֶלָּא, אַיֶּלֶת: מֵהַהוּא אֲתַר, דְּאִקְרֵי אַיֶּלֶת אֲהָבִים וְיַעֲלַת חֵן. וְהִיא אַתְיָא מֵהַהוּא אֲתַר דְּאִקְרֵי שַׁחַר, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר (הושע ו׳:ג׳) כַּשַׁחַר נָכוֹן מוֹצָאוֹ, וְדָוִד מַלְכָּא עַל כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל קָאָמַר דָּא, דְהָא לֹא אֲמְרָה כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל דָּא (ס"א דאקרי אילת אהבים ויעלת חן והיא אתייא מההוא אתר דאקרי שחר כמה דאת אמר כשחר נכון מוצאו ודוד מלכא על כנסת ישראל קאמר דא) מַשְׁמַע דִּכְתִּיב עַל אַיְּלֶת הַשַּׁחַר.
and R. Hiya commenced with the text, “For the Chief Musician, set to Ayeleth Hashahar, a psalm of David” (Ps. 22, 1). ‘ “Ayeleth Hashahar (lit. hind of the morning)” ‘, he said, ‘is the Community of Israel, who is called “a loving hind and a pleasant doe” (Prov. 5, 19). Is she then a hind of the morning only and not of all the day? What it means, however, is a hind from that place which is called ” dawn”, of which it says, “his going forth is as sure as the morning” (Hos. 6, 3).

תָּא חֲזִי, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּרָמַשׁ לֵילְיָא, פִּתְחִין סְתִימִין דְּעִלָּאֵי וְתַתָּאֵי מִשְׁתַּכְּחֵי (ס"א משתככי). וְכָל אִינּוּן רְחִיקִין, מִתְעָרִין וְאַזְלִין וְשָׁטָאן כָּל עָלְמָא, וּמְהַדְּרִין עַל גּוּפֵי בְּנִי נָשָׁא, וְסַחֲרֵי לְאַתְרַיְיהוּ וּלְעַרְסַיְיהוּ. וְחָמָאן דִּיּוּקְנָא דְּמַלְכָּא קַדִּישָׁא, וּמִסְתָּפֵי. דְּהָא אִתָּקָפוּ בְּעַרְסַיְיהוּ בְּמִלֵי דִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא. וּבְנֵי נָשָׁא, נִשְׁמָתְהוֹן סַלְּקִין כָּל חַד וְחַד כִּדְחֲזֵי לֵיהּ, וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ. זַכָּאָה חוּלָקֵיהוֹן דְּצַדִּיקַיָּיא, דְּנִשְׁמָתְהוֹן סַלְּקִין לְעֵילָּא, וְלָא מִתְעַכְּבֵי בַּאֲתַר אָחֳרָא דְּלָא אִצְטְרִיךְ.
See now. When night falls, the doors of the upper world are closed, and those below fall to rest, and the distant ones (demons) awake and fly about and flit around the bodies of men, but if they see the likeness of the Holy King they are afraid, if men on their beds have thought about the Holy King. The souls of men ascend each according to its desert, as explained elsewhere.
